Response to Intervention

Schools across the nation are in the process of planning and implementing the RTI or Response to Intervention Model.  This model is being used for both academic and behavioral support for all students.  Many students struggle academically and exhibit problem behaviors, as well.  It is widely known that behavior and academic success are closely linked and need to be addressed together. 

Schools are seeing:

  • A high number of offices referrals for behavioral problems
  • Limited skills in at-risk students
  • Classroom disruptions due to misbehavior
  • A high number of students with multiple office referrals
  • Declining teacher attendance as a result of school climate

Districts are realizing that they need schoolwide systems to address the needs of all students.  This includes classroom instruction, clear expectations, positive systems of encouragement and classroom management systems.  (Information based on the rti powerpoint presentation found at www.txbsi.org
